Paul Orazietti
Head Coach
A 34-year-old native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Paul Orazietti attended Queen's University and UBC as well as Lake Superior State University. Orazietti played running back and quarterback at his High School, Sir James Dunn, winning MVP honours in his senior year. Upon graduation in 1989 he played for 2 seasons at Queen's University as a fullback and linebacker. After a 4-year hiatus from playing, Orazietti played his remaining 3 CIS years at UBC and was part of a Vanier Cup winning team in 1997.
Orazietti began his coaching career in 1992 at White Pines High School in Sault Ste. Marie and moved to the CJFL in 1993 as assistant offensive coordinator of the Sault Storm. In 1994 Orazietti became the Head Coach of the Second Division Edinburgh Eagles of Scotland. In 1998 Orazietti joined the UBC coaching staff to work with the running backs at spring camp. Later that same year, he moved to Canmore, Alberta to pursue a teaching opportunity at Canmore Collegiate. Here he immediately founded the Bow Valley Wolverines High School team (a composite of Banff and Canmore High players). In one year Orazietti raised over $40,000.00 to bring High School football to the Rocky Mountains. Orazietti has led this team to 5 highly successful seasons, three appearances in the finals and a championship in 2002. He has posted a career record of 24 wins with 11 losses in the highly competitive Big Sky Conference of central Alberta. In 2001 Football Alberta named Orazietti High School Rookie Coach of the Year and 2002 he completed his National Coaching Certification Level III technical. In 2003 Orazietti was selected to coach the Southern Alberta High School All Star Team in the Annual Senior Bowl.
In 2005 Orazietti took over a Rebels team near collapse and with only 2 returning players picked up 3 wins in his first season. In only his second year Coach Orazietti was able to guide the Rebels to a playoff appearance and nearly defeated the eventual national champions in the Semi-finals losing 15-18 on a last second field goal.
Coach Orazietti has demonstrated a commitment to achieving excellence wherever he has coached. His 20 years of coaching and playing experience have greatly aided in the re-building of the Rebels organization. Orazietti is a self proclaimed “blue collar” coach who prides himself on outworking and out-recruiting other teams. His passion for the game and his drive to be successful and win a National Championship will assuredly provide the Rebels with many years of winning football.
John Cardilicchia
Defensive Coordinator
John grew up in Hamilton, Ontario, where he played high school and junior football. Prior to coaching the Rebels, John coached Bantam and Midget football in the Victoria region.
John was first appointed head coach in 1998, and the team saw immediate improvement ending the season with a 6 - 4 record. The following season brought more success with a second place finish of 6 – 3 – 1 and a CJFL defensive player MVP in Scott Gilbert. After a promising semifinal win, the Rebels were outplayed by the Okanagan Sun in their first ever BCFC final.
The 2000 season resulted in a 7 – 3 record and another CJFL defensive player MVP, thanks to the play of Mike Kissinger. The season finals saw the Rebels playing the Sun to into overtime and barely missing going to the Canadian Bowl, by a 38 – 43 score. The 2001 season brought another winning season as the Rebels posted a 6 – 3 – 1 record, but missed the playoffs in the very tough coastal division of the BCFC. Included in the victories was a season ending win over the Okanagan Sun by a score of 29 – 22.
The 2002 season brought another trip to the BCFC final, after a 7 – 3 season and semifinal win over the South Fraser Rams. Despite the championship loss to the Sun, the team received an honour with the Rebel’s Quarterback, Matt Nichols being named league MVP award.
After leaving the Rebels prior to the 2003 season, John continued his winning coaching ways by taking on his biggest challenge to date, namely the Saanich Atom team in the Vancouver Island Pee Wee league.
John was instrumental in keeping the Rebels in Victoria for the 2005 Season. In the off season he worked behind the scenes to assist in bringing in a new Head Coach, and organizing the successful spring camp.
